Herb shines the Community Spotlight on Maria Hitchcock. Maria is a long time local who has a passion for native plants and projects that bring economic benefit to our Armidale region. They chat about her work with the Australian Native Plant Society, gaining recognition for Golden Wattle, an Australian icon, and her work with New England Visions 2030.
Theresa Chatfield is a local Aboriginal (First Nations) Artist who paints to express her pride and joy in her Kamillaroi culture and talks about the close family links growing up in Moree on an Aboriginal Mission. Theresa also paints to distract and inspire her to keep going with the day to day effort of living with a severe and painful autoimmune disease. Teresa’s body of work includes many colours and uses traditional Indigenous art genres in a vibrant and contemporary way. Theresa has a current selling exhibition at the Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place.
Matt James is President of the University of New England Northern Tablelands Astronomical Society (UNENTAS). He describes the Webster Telescope at Kirby’s Observatory (UNE farm) and the many activities UNENTAS members can enjoy, including learning how to use the Webster Telescope.

Exciting news from the Dumaresq Dam Reserve! Mayor Sam Coupland and Paul Tolley discuss the recent upgrades, including a new playground, walking paths, and a jetty. The project came in under budget, allowing them to enhance the facilities.
However, Paul raises the need for a continuous loop around the dam for visitors with young children. The mayor acknowledges this and says they’re working on it. They also discuss plans for a side trail connecting the dam to the nearby future rail trail, providing a safer option for cyclists and pedestrians.
The speakers highlight the importance of dedicated walking and cycling paths along the roads, to address safety concerns.
